Coat colors
At DoubleStreet, color is not the primary focus. We create parent combinations based on (character) traits and the authenticity of the breed. We certainly understand the preferences of future owners and take these into account as much as possible.

For a breeder, it can sometimes be difficult to know for sure what the adult color will look like. The coat color of an Australian Cobberdog can change significantly as the dog grows older. For example, (deep) red puppies often turn apricot, and black puppies can transform into silver. One of the factors influencing this is the presence of the Progressive Greying gene, also known as the G-locus. This means that if the dog carries this gene, the color will gradually fade as the dog ages.

As the dog gets older, sunlight, air pollution, and the environment, combined with the natural aging process, will also affect the color of the coat. This is a gradual process, and owners may notice little difference.

Australian Cobberdogs come in coat colors such as parchment, brown (chocolate and café), caramel (cool and warm), cream, black, apricot, red, silver lavender, and parti (two or more colors). Additionally, there are also two possible pigment colors on the nose and paws: black and brown.

Coat care and grooming
To keep your Australian Cobberdog's coat healthy and shiny, regular grooming is essential. Brush the coat thoroughly at least once a week and use coat care products to prevent matting. Periodically washing and drying with a blow dryer helps maintain a beautiful appearance.

The Australian Cobberdog undergoes a coat change as they reach adulthood, which can lead to matting and felting. Regular brushing is essential to prevent this, and this period usually begins around 7-8 months and lasts until about the 15th month. In the first few months of life, your puppy will experience little to no matting, but it's important to start teaching them grooming early on. Teach your puppy that grooming is a relaxing moment and reward them generously with treats.

Since the Australian Cobberdog does not shed, it is important to take your dog to the groomer regularly, at least once every 5 months, depending on the level of grooming you do yourself. Various courses are offered to teach you how to trim your dog yourself. The waiting lists for good salons are quite long, so don't wait until the last minute. Many salons like to meet your puppy at around 4 months old with a ‘puppy introduction grooming session.’
