Their popularity is largely due to their exceptional friendliness, intelligence, and hypoallergenic, non-shedding coats. These qualities make them attractive to families, people with allergies, and especially suitable as assistance and therapy dogs. To understand the story behind these unique breeds, we need to go back in time.

Origins in Australia
In the late 1980s, Australian breeder Wally Conron began breeding a service dog that combined the gentle nature of the Labrador Retriever with the intelligence and coat characteristics of the Poodle. While this experiment resulted in a dog with unique qualities, the breed was not yet consistent in its early years. The first crossbreed was called a 'standard' Labradoodle. After Conron's experiment, Mellodie Woolley of Tegan Park and Beverley Manners of Rutland Manor played a crucial role in further developing the Australian Labradoodle. They introduced other breeds, such as the English and American Cocker Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel, and the Curly-Coated Retriever, to improve the genetic diversity and qualities of the breed. This resulted in the Australian Labradoodle as we know it today.

The development of the Australian Cobberdog
Initially, the term 'Australian Labradoodle' was used to describe dogs bred in Australia according to the vision of Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. However, over time, many Labradoodles appeared that did not meet this original vision. As a result, it became difficult to distinguish between authentic Australian Labradoodles and non-original variants. Today, the (Australian) Labradoodle is often overbred without control over the originally intended traits. In 2012, Beverley Manners decided to submit her breeding lines for breed recognition with the Master Dog Breeders and Associates (MDBA), changing the name to 'Cobberdog.' This was done to preserve the authenticity of the breed and the good breeding lines from Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, while distinguishing them from overbred Labradoodles.

On the website of the Australian Labradoodle breed association (ALAEU), it is stated that both the Australian Labradoodle and the Australian Cobberdog are "the same wine in different bottles." However, this is not the case. The Australian Cobberdog is, in fact, the final product of the original Labradoodle and Australian Labradoodle breeding program and is governed by strict breeding policies under independent management.

Our heritage
At DoubleStreet, we take great pride in the heritage of our dogs, all of which descend from dogs bred at Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. With great care, our dogs are bred to ensure both health and character. Recently, we strengthened our breeding program with a beautiful male named Rutland’s The Duke N StyleDuke was raised in Australia by Beverley Manners herself and comes from a remarkable lineage of dogs known for their behavioral traits in the Australian Cobberdog. With his charming personality, high intelligence, and silky, non-matting fleece coat, he is a valuable addition to our breeding program and contributes to our commitment to quality and excellence within the breed.

         Contact us

Het ras Oorsprong Contact opnemen In de wereld van hondenrassen hebben de Australian Labradoodle en de Australian Cobberdog een prominente plek veroverd.
